A friend suggested I watch this PBS series as the older version of it was a favorite of my brother's. I believe watching it helps me know who he was better. It is also challenging my beliefs a bit.
The Cosmos Ep 3
It appears that the creators of the program will continue to address belief in God, or a cosmic clockmaker, as a fear based solution to life’s big questions and a weakness, so we stand in disagreement. Here are my thoughts and sometimes defenses, I wish I could write dispassionately and professionally on this topic, but it’s too close to my core. Feel free to disregard this post.
The Darwinian Fairytale is bleak and sad to me. It does not make me feel better about anything, or more powerful.
The ignorance and self-centered position that I see in human beings today makes me wonder how the ancients figured out so much about physics, chemistry, etc. I don't doubt that they did, but today’s world wide news makes it appear as if we’re devolving intellectually. I wondered as I watched this one, if we aren’t significant beings with purpose, what difference does it make what we do? How and why do we try to distinguish between good and evil? Why would one want to sweep away the need for a cosmic clockmaker? For me, that would significantly lessen any purpose our existence might serve. What would be the point of anything without a spiritual world or a sovereign being?
The “see for yourself” motto is the same one we use in our homeschool Don’t just believe everything people say, look for their motives, follow the money, compare with other sources. ‘It’s true because I read it.’ is a joke.
I also enjoyed the cross referencing of comets over various cultures through time, the introduction to real live historical astronomers and their complex stories. Finally, the ending was a bit terrifying. I found it ironic that an episode on ‘knowledge conquering fear’ would sweep away my foundation in a Great Caregiver and then presume that a blending of the two galaxies would not frighten me. Of course I understand that this will not happen in my lifetime, but the image alone sparked the truth about how very weak and small I am, shudder.
