We first learned about GAK when P.E. went to preschool in 1996. I volunteered one day and was mesmerized along with all the students when Mrs. C. dramatically transformed a bowl of glue and water, into a rubbery 'dough'. It was amazing. So, our love for the stuff was born. GAK was one of the first words each of our babies learned to say. And if you've visited our home, chances are you've experienced the magic too. For those who haven't been so blessed, here are detailed instructions. Download the file at the top of this page for a printable copy.
2 c. White Dap or Elmer's School Glue
1 1/2 c. Water
Food Coloring
1 c. Hot Tap Water
3 t. Borax
1. In a large bowl combine the glue, 1 1/2 c. water and several drops of food coloring.
2. Into three separate cups mix 1/3 c. hot tap water and 1 teaspoon Borax. Stir each until dissolved.
3. Add one of the small cups containing the borax/water solution into the large bowl of colored glue and water. There will be an immediate reaction between the mixtures. Quickly begin 'gathering up' the resulting GAK and set it aside on the table. It will be wet and messy, but with some kneading it will soon be more solid. You should get enough to fill up both hands. There will be leftover water and glue mixture. Now repeat the process with the second and third cups of borax/water. If the GAK is too sticky, add a little more borax/water and knead it into the ball of GAK.

NOTES:
Regular Elmer's White Glue works too and can be purchased at the hardware store for about $15/gallon, it may be slightly more difficult to remove from carpet and clothing.
Borax is a laundry product. The most common brand is Mule Team, it comes in a green box and can be found in the cleaning section of most major stores.
GAK will 'melt' into fabric if left there too long. We have found that a good long soak in water is the best method for removing it.

Adding all three cups of borax/water at the same time will make the GAK more stiff.
Store in a sealed plastic bag when not in use, for up to two weeks.
In 2012 we made a string of GAK that circled all the way around our table, and then some!
